If Jennifer Lopez is only ever remembered for one thing, we all know it’s going to be her backside, Selena and that Grammy dress. What needs to be on that list though is The Wedding Planner because that is a gem of a movie. Why was it this week’s pick though? Perhaps because when you think of wedding planning, it’s the first thing that comes to mind? Yup, that’s exactly why. Also because it shows the bad side of what goes into a wedding when you aren’t really in it for the love and are more so there for the day.
Again, TLC shows about saying yes to dresses and the big day are my shit and even when I was little and up through college I had ideas of what I wanted my wedding to be like. Then I realized how much things actually cost and revoked all those ideas. The idea of eloping became more and more the ideal, as did just going down the courthouse because money – it is the one thing not flowing through my existence.
Gun to my head I couldn’t tell you the names of 10 people I went to college with, but high school? Middle school? I can rattle off names, birthdays and a million and one memories…One of them being Queena Phommasene (who was born at the start of January by the way). It’s hard to forget someone like her. Always drawing interesting pictures in notebooks, doing something with her hair or making her own homecoming court dress – it was easy to guess she’d have one of the most hands on wedding when she got older. And I guessed right!
Like a lot of people, Queena admits that she had ideas in her head about her wedding day long before an engagement was set in stone. Being a creative person, her thoughts were mostly about the decor; a sea of red, black and silver at the time. Today she’s still got her mind on what the day will look like, and with that we’ll get to hear more from the bride to be about planning her wedding which is set to take place a year or so from now.
Friday nights used to be reserved for my ass sitting alone watching the hell out of TLC’s wedding show lineup. I would gasp at the beauty of the dresses on Say Yes, judge the shit out of every one of the participants on Four Weddings and even tried to watch other shows that never quite made it…No one cares about the bridesmaid dress, sorry! So yes, I fucking love me a wedding but when I got into a relationship and a year or so went by, the talk of marriage had me thinking, “Yeah, no. That is just too expensive.” I will always love the idea, but when someone else is picking up the tab and that’s what this week is about. Well, not on how to get someone to pay for your big day, but the idea of planning a wedding because this month is about marriage and you usually don’t have that without a big ceremony with family, friends, presents and some stress on top.
