It doesn’t matter who you are, famous or not, people will go about judging you and your lifestyle at some point during your existence. Can we agree though that women have to deal with this a whole lot more though? Whether it’s wearing or not wearing enough makeup, the way we choose to dress, the jobs we take, or in the case of this week – our sexual nature. In the last couple of years Amber Rose has started her own SlutWalk events and they’ve been very well received. One can’t be sure if it’s the feminist message, or the fact that she’s a famous face holding an event where girls come with their boobs hanging out – but nevertheless, they are popular and still continue to happen. The message of these walks is to not only bring awareness to the idea of slut shaming, but to take that word back. Words cannot hurt if you take away the negativity that surrounds them. It’s also a call to action to change the idea of rape culture.

Sluts They Are Not

Growing up a fat girl who looked more like a fat boy, there was never anyone looking to hook up with me until I got a hell of a lot older and put some effort into life. The UnSlut Project’s Emily Lindin Sparks Change

the-unslut-project-emily-linden-interviewTeasing is a part of everyone’s past. For some it can be shaken off and thought of as a piece of their adolescence, but for some it was a nightmare they wouldn’t wish on anyone. For Emily Lindin, it was just that. Being attacked for things she’d never done, but that were rather assumed of her – Emily was more than teased, she was harassed and made to feel so low, that ending her life was often a thought. Instead of giving in though, she took to writing in a diary. She wrote down every moment, every feeling, every ounce of pain was poured onto those pages.

Fast forward to a grown up Emily, a strong woman who thought that her words and experience could help others. With that, her diary was published and The UnSlut Project was born. When it comes to the Project she says, “I’m not about reclaiming the word ‘slut’ OR getting rid of it all together. I’m about undoing the entire ‘concept’ of a slut – the idea that women can be categorized according to some undefined parameters of acceptable sexuality. I want ‘slut’ to lose its power as an insult, so it seems ridiculous and archaic.”

Slut Shaming: The Shade of it All

For a long time women have been placed in a number of boxes be it the bitch vs. the pushover, the geek vs. the rebel and to go along with this week’s topic – the whore vs. the virgin. For far too long women who enjoy sex have been deemed whores, sluts, lose and a cascade of other demeaning words. While men who sleep around have always been considered kings among men. We don’t have to point out the obvious, but it’s one of the oldest double standard out there. Thankfully women (and a good amount of men!) ain’t about that and have been taking a stance against slut shaming. From Slut Walks to realizing they can take the initiative to swipe right without being called a promiscuous girl.
