Wish You Were Here: When Your Family Isn’t Around the Corner

Just a month ago 40% of you said when it came time to move out, you packed up and headed to a whole new state. That means right now those 40% are sitting away from their family and likely not seeing them as much as those of us who either live not too far from our mom and dad, in the same town as them still, or for some of you – in the same house. When that happens the inevitable is that you’ll miss your loved ones from time to time. It’s natural to be homesick…or is it?

Sitting at the library in downtown, avoiding crazy people, I read in Susan Matt’s Homesickness: An American History that, “Expert literature written for mental health practitioners, as well as popular culture, have ceaselessly promoted the idea that homesickness is a condition that, with proper training can be eliminated in childhood. Consequently, those who feel it as adults are seen as maladjusted.” So we’re supposed to get over missing our mom’s when we’re kids and when we fly the nest, to have any sort of emotional distress is just wrong?

The Tattletale Vs. The Rebel: Top 10 Ways to End Your Adult Sibling Rivalry

http://thoughtcatalog.com/chelsea-fagan/2013/02/what-your-favorite-daria-character-says-about-you/
Looking at this title, I just wanted to share that even at 28…I was still tattling on my younger brother to our dad this week. Our dad even told my brother, “You know your sister will be right back on this phone if you don’t start acting right.” With that, I’d say maybe one of the ways to end your adult rivalry between your siblings is to not rat them out every chance you get – but sometimes they deserve to be called out. Anyways, here are some other ideas to squash the beef between you two if you’re still walking that rivalry line.

The Original Rivalry

A handful of shows have been notes this week from The Simpsons to Shameless, but when the foundation of this project was being churned in the mixer, another show came to mind. The Mikaelsons on The Originals have one of the most intricately woven history that includes not only rivalry, betrayal and quite a load of bloodshed but also one of loyalty and in a twisted way, love.

Two Barts and a Lisa

Last week we looked at Cindy and Cora’s relationship and found that just because you’re born into a family, doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll bond with them. No, their close knit relationship came around adolescence and has been growing ever since. Sisters who rarely talked are now the kind you can often find traveling with one another. I told my mom about them and asked, “Can you imagine me, Dwayne and Ray Ray taking a trip together?” She could only laugh and say we’d likely kill one another. She wasn’t wrong. This isn’t because of some horrible past even that’s led us to be distant siblings who will never utter one another’s name. It’s based on age, location and well – beliefs. Remember Bird said you had to have some shared values, well ours are slim. We never had what the Campion sister’s of Rocky’s Revival had’ a musical connection that grew into a career. What we do have in common is being extremely stubborn and it’s worse when it comes to one another.

Rocky’s Revival and the Absent Rivalry

Like a lot of sisters, Kalina and Kiana Campion were opposites growing up. Kiana the disorderly extrovert never held a grudge too long, while Kalina shy more on the shy side as she kept her room neat, and needed time to get over her anger when she and her sister got into an argument about this and that. While their relationship mirrors many, they got over the things that made them different from one another and started to focus on their shared interest; music. Being the daughters of a professional musician, Kalina noted music was “in our veins.” So to some they may always be the Campion sisters, but to the music world, they’re Rocky’s Revival.

Many would agree they love their brothers and sisters but creating a career with them? That’s bound to bring up old memories of fighting over mom and dad’s affection, right? That doesn’t seem to be the case for Rocky’s Revival. They’ve been making music together for years and continue to do so on their latest EP, Newspaper Dream, out February 19. Now let’s hear more from Kalina as she tells us what it’s like to share not only her life with her sister, but her career and musical aspirations.
